 CHILDREN’S UPDATE
Week of Feb. 12

10:10 – 10:55 a.m.

Favorite Bible Stories is the theme for Sunday school for preschool through 3rd grade the next two weeks. They will begin a Lenten study later this month. Favorite Bible Stories will resume after Easter. The lesson on Feb. 12 is “Jacob’s Ladder.” The key verse is from Genesis 28:15, “Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go.” Even though Jacob tricked his father and received the blessing intended for his twin brother, Esau, God forgave him and used him to fulfill God’s promise.

The tweens are studying "A United Methodist Is.” This is a six-week study that introduces tweens to John and Charles Wesley and the Methodist movement, what it stands for, and its basic beliefs. John Wesley believed that the world is my parish. This week the children will explore the concept of Amazing Grace. The goals for this lesson are as follows.
            Tweens will
·         Be able to define the three kinds of grace as defined by John Wesley.
·         Recognize and affirm the ways God’s grace prepares and enables us to live the Christian life.
·         Name the two sacraments in United Methodism.
·         Experience confession and thanksgiving.

Children's Church is available during the 9:00 a.m. worship services in the youth room upstairs. The material is geared to children age 3 through 2nd grade, but older children are welcome to help as long as there is room. There is nursery available for infants through age 3 downstairs. The theme for this week is Valentine’s Day: “L” Stands for Love. If you would like to help lead Children's Church, please contact Ellen, eclements@baylakeumc.org.

Sunday Service OPS for K-5th graders will meet at 4 p.m. this afternoon to complete the Friendship Bags for the Virginia Wesleyan college students. Please remember to bring items for the Friendship Bags. Ideas for the bags include: chips, pretzels, microwave popcorn, hot chocolate packets, tea bags, gum, chapsticks, pens, small notebooks or $5 gift cards for Starbucks. We will practice one of our songs for Children's Sabbath, have a snack and then deliver the bags to Virginia Wesleyan College. All children must have a permission slip on file in order to go on the field trip. Please see Ellen Clements if you need a form for your child. The children will return to the church around 6 p.m.

THE WAY OF THE CHILD is a resource that helps children to develop an intimate, personal relationship with God. The children have an opportunity to experience and practice spiritual disciplines to nurture that relationship for a lifetime. Please pray for the 7 children involved in this program. This Sunday we continue our exploration of the “Fruit of the Spirit” in the various stations of sand, gazing, reading, journaling, world, and art. The Bible is referred to as the bread for life. In this session, the children will experience eating fresh bread as an illustration of how we digest real bread in our bodies for physical nourishment just like we “digest” the Word of God for spiritual nourishment.

TEACHER ENRICHMENT SESSION AND LUNCHEON

A Teacher Enrichment Session with lunch will be held on Sunday, February 26 at 12:15 p.m. in the social hall. All Children's Sunday School teachers and Children's Church teachers are invited to attend. Childcare will be available in the nursery. Child Protection will be one of the topics of the session as well as ideas for Lent and Easter. Please RSVP to Ellen, eclements@baylakeumc.org by Feb. 22.

Summer Day Camp - Camp GOTCHA
This Elizabeth River District-sponsored event is hosted by Baylake each summer during the first week of August (July 30-August 3, 2012). Programmed for rising third through fifth-graders, children from all over the District enjoy five days filled with outdoor activities like canoeing, hiking, swimming, as well as music and arts and crafts. There is a small fee for the camp that starts at $15 and increases incrementally as the start date gets closer, to encourage early advance registration and ensure adequate staffing.

Partners in Progress - Tutoring
On Wednesdays, during November and May, Baylake participates in the “Partners in Progress” after-school tutoring program for students from Thoroughgood Elementary School. This program is designed to supplement classroom instruction and encourage children in their academic endeavors. It is free of charge and staffed by members of the church. Transportation is available, and snacks and supervised recreation are also provided.

In order to fully staff our children's programs, parents and church members are asked to volunteer periodically. As a volunteer you only need to love the children and assist the teachers, please contact the Director of Children's Ministries, Ellen Clements, for details (464-2423).
